AMPS (the predominant U.S. cellular standard) stands for Advanced Mobile Phone System.

GSM (the cellular standard used extensively around the world) stands for Global System for Mobile Communications.

The two standards are not compatible with each other. PCS - which is also used in the U.S. - uses a variation of GSM, but it, too, is not compatible with GSM. Tell me more.
